Overview

What Is Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint?

Thermoplastic road marking paint applied on a road in Kenya

Thermoplastic road marking paint is a solid, powder or granular material made from resin, pigment, filler and glass beads. It is melted in a pre-heater at around 180–220°C and applied to the pavement, where it cools in minutes and bonds to form a thick, hard-wearing line.

Compared with conventional solvent-based road paint, thermoplastic lasts much longer, stays more visible at night and in the rain, and withstands heavy traffic – making it the preferred choice for permanent road markings on highways and busy urban roads across Kenya.

  • Long service life – typically 3 to 5 years
  • Premixed glass beads for night-time retro-reflectivity
  • Fast setting – reopen to traffic in minutes
  • Excellent resistance to abrasion, oil and weather
  • Strong bond to asphalt and concrete surfaces

Hot-Melt Application

Glass beads are what make a road line glow when headlights hit it. Thermoplastic paint contains premixed beads that stay reflective as the line wears down, while additional drop-on beads are sprayed onto the molten line during application for strong, immediate retro-reflectivity.

Together, premixed and drop-on beads keep your lane lines, edge lines and crossings clearly visible at night and in wet weather – a critical road-safety requirement on unlit rural highways. Ask us for glass beads, primers and other road marking accessories together with your paint order.

Applications

Where Thermoplastic Road Marking Is Used

Highways & Expressways

Centre lines, edge lines and lane dividers that must withstand high-speed, heavy-truck traffic for years.

Urban & City Roads

Zebra crossings, stop lines, arrows, bus lanes and junction markings in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and other towns.

Airports & Industrial Sites

Taxiway, apron and yard markings that resist fuel, oil and constant wheel loads.

Car Parks & Estates

Parking bays, directional arrows and pedestrian walkways for malls, hospitals, schools and housing estates.

Application

How Thermoplastic Road Marking Is Applied

Clean the Surface

Sweep and blow away dust, dirt and loose material. The road must be dry for a proper bond.

Layout & Primer

Mark the line positions and apply primer where required, especially on concrete surfaces.

Melt the Material

Load the thermoplastic into a pre-heater or melter and heat to about 180–220°C with continuous stirring.

Apply the Line

Use a screed, extrusion or spray machine to lay the line at the specified thickness and width.

Drop-On Beads

Immediately spread drop-on glass beads onto the hot line for instant reflectivity.

Cool & Open

The line hardens in 1–3 minutes and the lane can be reopened to traffic quickly.

FAQ

Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint – Frequently Asked Questions

What is thermoplastic road marking paint?

Thermoplastic road marking paint is a solid, hot-melt material made from resin, pigment, filler and glass beads. It is heated to around 180–220°C, applied to the road surface and cools within minutes to form a thick, durable, highly reflective line.

How long does thermoplastic road marking last?

Under normal conditions thermoplastic markings typically last 3 to 5 years, much longer than conventional solvent-based road paint. Actual life depends on traffic volume, road surface condition and application quality.

What colours of thermoplastic paint do you supply?

We supply white and yellow thermoplastic road marking paint – the standard colours for lane lines, edge lines, centre lines, zebra crossings and parking bays. Other colours can be requested.

How fast does thermoplastic paint dry?

It cools and hardens in roughly 1 to 3 minutes after application, which reduces lane-closure time and traffic disruption.

Do I need glass beads with thermoplastic paint?

Yes. Glass beads make the line retro-reflective at night. Beads are premixed into the thermoplastic and extra drop-on beads are sprayed onto the hot line during application for immediate reflectivity.

Do you deliver thermoplastic paint across Kenya?

Yes. Sunrise Road Technology Ltd delivers to Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret and other counties. Contact us on WhatsApp or through the contact form for a quote and delivery timeline.
